The loading mechanism has a sliding and/or rotary grab delivering work to a machine-tool chuck, allowing some rotary and/or sliding movement during the transfer operation. To enable this movement to take place, the grab (3) and/or its supporting arm have spring or hydraulically-controlled components (45,46), which however are held rigid while the work is being transported. Where the grab is of the two-finger parallel type with fingers guided in rails in the grab head (4) and clamped against the work by a screwed spindle (37,38), the spindle can be mounted in the head with the aid of hydraulic rams (45,46). This allows axial movement together with the fingers in the head.
