The ultra sound (u.s.) distance measuring system is built into the handle of a walking stick so that a blind person has one hand free, also on the handle is a distance range adjustment the relative position of which is easily determined by touch. A finger operated ratchet lever (13), the position of which is easily felt, adjusts the range of the u.s. system by rotating a potentiometer. The front of the handle has a funnel-shaped opening (5) which leads to the ultrasound transducer (7). A wide angle receiver (9) below this funnel may optionally be switched into the circuit by a touch switch (11).
