A blind and partially sighted persons orientation aid is integrated in a blind persons stick (10), hand held (12) or body carried unit and has a sensor (16) transmitting modulated signals with phase modulation detector array output processed to give sound (20) or touch indication with tone depending on the distance to objects in the set volume (18).
