The rate of fuel consumption gauge for road vehicles includes a facility to indicate when the vehicle is being driven such that consumption falls within an optimum range. The gauge has a pointer that is supported upon a gear wheel and is moved by a quadrant gear coupled to a Bourdon tube. The tube is coupled to the suction inlet of the carburettor. An indicator bulb is set into the fuel gauge and is coupled to a switch controlled by the speed setting and a switch responsive to load. The latter is actuated by a cam coupled to the gear. When the pointer exceeds an optimum region the light is activated to indicate that a change of gear is necessary.
