Frictional clamp for rod movable axially in tube - using compression and twisting to expand spring inside tube

A frictional clamp consists of a rod (2) able to move axially within a tubular casing (1) contg. a press. spring (10) around the rod and with one end resting on a stop (5) attached to the casing or rod. An operating lever (9) causes the spring to expand and come into contact with the other axial element not carrying the stop. It is applicable in adjustable vehicle seat mechanisms and ensures reliable clamping under high axial loadings, e.g during rapid decelerations. The spring stop is attached to the rod. The spring expansion pushes it against the inner wall of the casing. The spring may be compressed, twisted, or twisted and compressed by the actuating lever which acts on a ring (7) enclosing the rod at the opposite end of the spring from the stop.
