A process for the thermal regeneration of adsorbents, charged, by means of a gaseous regeneration fluid, incorporates the regeneration fluid being heated in the heat exchanger of the condenser of a heat pump. This hot regeneration fluid passes through the adsorbent and is then cooled, with the extracted desorbate, in the heat exchanger of the evaporator of the same heat pump. The heat pump is pref. constructed as a heat pump by compression, in which the compressor of the heat transfer fluid is driven by an internal combustion engine. The process consumes less energy and utilises fewer mechanical construction elements than existing processes, and the process is therefore more economical.
