The invention also relates to a method for exchanging heat, a method for cooling a room, and a method for heating a room. The regenerative heat exchanger (1) comprises at least one compartment (2, 3), connection means in order to be able to incorporate the heat exchanger in at least two conduct systems (4, 5) and (6, 7), and changeover means (8, 9), in order to be able to incorporate the at least one compartment (2, 3) alternately in one or the other conduct system. The at least one compartment is provided with a bed of particulate material. The packing density of the bed is between 0.2 and 0.8.
