Thermal regeneration of spent sorption material - via scrubbing gas which is heated and cooled by one heat pump to minimise total energy consumption

The regenerating gas is heated in the heat exchanger of a heat pump, and then flows through the spent material to the heat exchanger of an evaporator, so the gas is cooled and impurities collected from material are condensed. The condensed impurities are removed from exchanger by a drain. Evaporator forms part of heat pump. The heat pump pref. used an IC engine to drive a compressor feeding a refrigerant through the heat pump; and at least part of the exhaust gas from the IC engine is pref. used as the regenerating gas. Used e.g. in regenerating active charcoal or alumina.
