Hand-held electrostatic spray gun - incorporates transformer and HV network supplying charging electrode for direct supply from mains

The spray gun has a paint container (13) coupled to an atomiser, with a jet electrode (7) applied with a rectified HV via a network (6) coupled directly to the mains supply via a transformer (3,5) incorporated in the housing (15) of the spray gun. This network (6) pref. comprises a rectifier (6a) connected across the transformer secondary (5) followed by an oscillator (6b) supplying in intermediate frequency to an HV transformer (6c). This is coupled to the spray jet electrode (7) via a cascade voltage multiplier (6d). Pref. an earthed safety winding (4) is provided between the transformer primary and secondary windings (3,5) and the primary winding (3) also acts as the energising winding of an oscillatory armature pump motor (1) used to feed the paint from the paint container (13) to the atomiser. The spray gun does not require a separate HV generator so that it is more compact and has greater working flexibility.
