Aluminium:tin bearing alloy - with addns. of chromium and other elements increasing hot hardness and fatigue strength, esp. for bearings for IC engine crankshafts
Alloy contains by wt. over 7% to 35% Sn; and over 1% to 10% in total of two or more of Cr, Si, Mn, Sb, Ti, Zr, Ni, Fe W, Ce, Nb, V, Mo, Ba, Ca, Co, but esp. of C Cr and Si, and where over 1% to 10% Cr is present; the remainder is Al. The alloy is pref. mounted on a steel sheet underlay by pressure welding; and is used esp. in an IC engine for bearings holding a shaft made of nodular cast iron. The alloy may also contain max. 3%, esp. 0.1-2% Cu and/or Mg; and 9% max. of Pb, Bi, T1, Cd, and/or In. The compsn. of the alloy improves the hot hardness of the bearing, and increases its wear resistance, so better fatigue strength is obtd. Used esp. for bearings for IC engine crankshafts possessing a hard, rough surface.
