Composite material for antifriction or sliding elements - esp. plain bearings for IC engines, using steel substrate coated with aluminium:lead alloy by evapn.
A metal substrate is located in a vacuum chamber contg. at least two crucibles holding molten metals to be evaporated, to form a top coating and/or an intermediate coating on the substrate, of alloys in which the two metals are insol. in each other. Evapn. follows a desired program to obtain a layer or layers with desired compsns. Electron beams deflected by magnetic fields are pref. used to heat the metals being evaporated onto a metal strip substrate in a continuous process. One crucible pref. contains an A1 alloy, esp. A1CuNi 0.5, whereas the other crucible contains a Pb alloy, esp. with compsn. PbSn2 or PbSn4. Alternatively, one crucible may contain a tin bronze, whereas the other contains a lead bronze. Esp. where a steel strip substrate is coated with an A1Pb bearing alloy to replace A1 alloys cont. substantial amts. of tin, which is now very expensive.
