Powder metallurgy is employed to make a composite blank contg. Al and glass powders. The blank is then moulded or pressed into a desired shape using a process in which the Al is deformed by the pressure of the molten glass. The glass is pref. selected so both the Al and the glass have the same resistance to deformation at the moulding or pressing temp. The amt. of glass employed in the blank is pref. employed to control the coefft. of thermal expansion of the composite material; and the type of glass used pref. ensures wetting of the Al so tha high strength is also obtd. in a direction at 90 deg. to the pressing direction. The pressing temp. of the blank pref. depends on the amt. of deformation required. Aluminium and glass are readily available in large quantities; and the invention produces a material or prods. in which a low density is combined with high strength.
