Initial powders or mixts. of powders are prepressed to make a blank, which is then sintered in vacuo. Directly after sintering, and while the blank is still hot, the same container is employed for the hot pressing of the sintered blank using hot, compressed gas. The powders which are not pre-alloyed can be converted into a dense prod. completely free from microporosity, and with high mechanical strength. The invention provides a simple, inexpensive method of mfg. dense prods. Useful for mfr. of parts made of iron; steel; hard metals; or hard materials with a metal or ceramic binder. The initial metal powders may contain up to 80 wt.% of carbides, nitrides, borides, or silicides.
