Two cylinders are moved to and fro under hydraulic pressure, with pressure bridge connection, on centrally sited pistons associated with two piston rods sited parallel to each other in a single plane, in a horizontal pressing appliance for laying pipes or cables. One end of the bridge (5) has a rotary drive unit (8) detachably fastened to it. Both lie on one axis, with the drive unit regulated independently of the press drive. The rotary drive can be hydraulic driving a moving carrier, via reduction gear, serving to accommodate a tool. This prevents geological factors from forcing rods off course, and the system is widely applicable.
