The appts. is of the type in which the skin is run through the nip between a horizontal, cylindrical, rotary roller and a series of spaced, independently rotatable measuring discs on a common horizontal axis. Within the roller, a light source transmits radiation towards photo-electric cells between the discs. Interruption of the signal from a cell indicates the presence of skin at the circumference of a disc adjacent to the cell. The roller now takes the form of a series of parallel rings, each ring aligned with a measuring disc. The roller is supported on and rotated by two drums on parallel axes. At least one of the drums is grooved or fitted with annular shoulders to maintain the rings in spaced, parallel relationship. The light source extends through the rings, pref. carried on a support bar which also extends through the rings. Appts. can be made big enough to handle very large skins since it no longer needs to use a transparent, e.g. glass roller, to contain the light source.
