The mould includes an outer sheath surrounding a water cooled insert made of a material with high thermal conductivity. On the outlet end of the sheath is a detachable, water cooled ring made of a wear resistant material. The internal dia. (d) of the ring is selected via the relationship:- d is D-K; where D is the internal dia. of ring (3); K is larger than zero and has a max. value of N; and N is the magnitude of the shrinkage of the cast ingot at the mould exit. The danger of the thin solidified skin of the ingot or billet breaking at the mould exit is minimised, due to the uniform cooling at the mould exit.
