Resin coated mouldings with colour concentrated on high relief - to align grain and colour patterns for imitation wood surfaces

Mouldings with a surface relief colour patterns are made by preparing a mould tool with concavities aligned with the zones of max. colour density and using a coloured liq. resin to prime the concavities to produce locally darker shades on the surface of a supporting moulding. The master block of wood may be etched by hot caustic treatment to get the liqueous grain to stand proud of the cellulosic matrix. The wood surface with its enhanced texture is used to imprint a viscous moulding material of e.g. partially cured polyester resin with the liqueous grain pattern. After curing the resulting negative mould block the coloured resin is applied so that the depressions are lined or filled with resin in a state which will still bond with a core layer pressed using the coated mould. The resulting relief zones of the moulding are relatively dark due to variations in the depth of coloured resin present and/or the effect of looking obliquely through parts of a coating of uniform thickness. Esp. for imitating wood grain or similar patterns, to ensure alignment between the colour treatment and the superficial grain pattern. Esp. claimed for mouldings of e.g. particle board with gel coats of polyester resin, opt. also coloured.
