Electrochemical preparation method for a high power selectively absorbent surface comprises depositing a cathodic Ni layer on a metal substrate from an aq. acid nickel chloride soln. and anodising (at 600-850 mV) the nickel layer depositing using 5-8M aq. H2SO4. The electrodeposition is effected at 20-70 (30-50) deg.C and 0.5-2 A/dm2 from a bath contg. 200-400g/l NiCl2 at pH 1-2 with stirring until a layer not less than 10 microns thick is deposited. Anodising is then effected at 10-30 deg.C at 750mV in a 6M H2SO4 both to give a Ni0 layer of about 100mm thickness. The method is used for mfr. of solar cells esp. for prodn. of solar cold and in concn. and desalination plants.
