NEW MATERIAL:A cis-3. cis-5-octadienal shown by the formula I [Y is =O, or -(OR)2(R is 1-10C alkyl, 3-10C alkenyl, or form 2-3C methylene bond). EXAMPLE:Cis-3.cis-5-octadienal dimethyl acetal. USE:A lasting perfume, flavor, or modifier. or synthetic intermediate. Having improved perfume like fruits and lasting effects. PROCESS:An acetal derivative of 3-butynal shown by the formula III is condensed with a 1-halogeno-butin shown by the formula IV(X is halogen) in the presence of an amine and a cuprous ion to give an acetal derivative of 3,5-octadienal shown by the formula II, which is subjected to catalystic hydrogenation in the presence of a catalystic hydrogenation catalyst to give a compound shown by the formula I where Y is -(OR)2.This compound is deacetalized, to give a compound shown by the formula I where Y is O.
