PURPOSE:To obtain a soil improving material or pollution preventing material rich in active constituents having a high adsorptivity, by predrying a raw mudstone with hot air, crushing the stone in a crusher, drying the crushed stone in a direct heating dryer, pulverizing the dried stone in a pulverizer, adding a paste nontoxic to men and cattle thereto, and granulating the resultant mixture in a granulator. CONSTITUTION:A raw mudstone which is a naturally occurring porous clay mineral having a wide space between particles is mined, transferred and shelved in a hot-air dryer and predried. After the moisture of the raw mudstone is reduced to 22-25% (optionally by the natural drying), the stone is crushed by a crusher, and dehumidified and dried to a moisture content of 10-15% while being fed continuously to a direct heating dryer, e.g. a rotary kiln. The dried stone is then pulverized by a feed grinder or hammer mill to a particle size of 30-50 mesh and not to destory the components contained therein. A paste nontoxic to men and cattle is added thereto, and the resultant mixture is kneaded and granulated in a screw feeder granulator and then dried to give the aimed material.
