PURPOSE:To enable automatic discrimination of front side and rear side, by using that the electric signal intensity obtained by forming a real image produced from the emission of light on the surface of a work to be processed with a slope, on a photoelectric transducer, due to the deformation produced at processing. CONSTITUTION:A light is irradiated on one surface of a work to be sheared with a slope, the image is formed on a photoelectric transducer by using the lens system and the discrimination of front or rear side is made by comparing the output of the photoelectric transducer obtained in this case at a comparator. For example, the surface of the work 1 to be sheared is irradiated with a light A with a slope and the real image is obtained on the photoelectric transducer 4 having a mask 5, allowing to obtain a greater difference between the front side and rear side of the output of the photoelectric transducer due to the effect of burr produced at the circumference of the work to be processed. Thus, the automatic discrimination for front side and rear side can be made simply, surely and efficiently, by comparing the signal intensity through the use of a comparator.
