The circuit forms rectangular pulses from values derived from the current in the supply and from either the voltage or a further current in the supply. The pulses are compared in a downstream circuit. The flow direction can be determined from the circuit condition even when both measurement values are too small and/or lie below defined values. The pulses are formed in comparators (4,13), each of which receives one of the measurement signals (U1,U2) at one input. An adjustable voltage (UV) is applied to the other input of one comparator so that the pulses are formed according to the measurement value and variable voltage. The pulses are compared in an AND element.
