A PROCESS FOR THE PREPARATION OF VINBLASTINE FROM VINCA ROSEA

A method for the preparation of vinblastine form vinca rosea which comprises in treating defatted vinca rosea with a solution of tartaric acid so that the alkaloids present in said vinca rosea are dissolved in said acid, subjecting said solution consisting of tartaric acid and alkaloids to a liquid-liquid extraction with aromatic hydrocarbons as herein described separating the soluble tartrates from and concentrating the same, liberating the alkaloids from the tartrates by a basification step, subjecting the extracted alkaloid to the step of TLC to obtain a Band I consisting of vinblastine and a Band II of vinblastine, subjecting Band II to a step of extraction using solvents such as methanol to obtain vinblastine.
