Appts. comprises a base to support the meat and a carrier for at least one blade which is movable towards and away from the base by a pneumatic actuator. The base is provided with at least one groove (not shown) below the blade whilst the profiles of blade flanks and groove are such that these flanks come into contact with the edges of the groove and thus prevent the cutting edge of the blade from reaching the bottom of the groove. Blade and groove may be slightly convex relative to one another in longitudinal direction. The groove bottom may be provided with openings for removing meat rests extending downwardly through the base. Used for mechanically cutting meat into portions. The arrangement prevents damage to the cutting edge of the blade and to the base without the need for accurate control of the blade stroke, thus increasing their effective life.
