Production of beta-ergocryptine by cultivation of the new microorganism Claviceps purpurea FI 7374 in a liq. culture medium contg. sources of carbon, nitrogen and mineral salts, under aerobic conditions, at 22-28 degrees C (pref. 24 degrees C) and pH 4.5-6.5 for 10-16 days followed by extraction of the alkaloid from the fermentation broth and purification by usual methods. beta-Ergocryptine has similar pharmacological activity to that of alpha-ergocryptine. Suitable carbon sources are glucose, saccharise, mannitol, sorbitol, glycerine, citric acid, succinic acid. Nitrogen sources include asparagine, casein hydrolysats, peptones, ammonium salts e.g. NH4Cl.
