Solutions of the flavonoids in an organic solvent, which optionally contains water, are subjected to column chromatography. Used as sorbents are granular oxides, hydroxides or basic salts of doubly charged cations which are insoluble in the solvent used but are soluble in dilute acids and whose aqueous suspensions have a pH of 7 - 13. It is possible to use a single column or a plurality of columns which are arranged in series and which are packed with the same or with different sorbent(s). The concomitant substances are washed out by elution with organic solvents in which the sorbents are insoluble. The resulting flavonoid-sorbent complexes are dissolved in dilute acids, and the flavonoids are isolated from the resulting acid solution. The process makes it possible smoothly to remove the concomitant substances without losses of flavonoids and can be used on the industrial scale. Flavonoids are an important and widespread class of vegetable pigments and have a good effect on the heart and blood vessels.
