The cash drawer of a cash register is designed such that adequate support is provided when fully open, without making the overall depth of the register too great. The drawer section slides in a rectangular housing and is guarded on a compound rack mechanism located on either side. The drawer has a side plate with an attached rack. A bottom rack meshes with a gear wheel mounted on a shaft at the rear of the housing. A top plate slides in the housing and has a rack. A small gear meshes with the two racks. When the drawer is opened, the top rack moves towards the back of the housing to maintain full support.
