In dry gas purificn., pref. after power stations, the crude gas is impacted with O3, pref. in the region of baffles. The gas is pref. passed into pipes and following plant totally isolated, so that it is still at a temp. of ca. 140-160 deg.C in the region of O3 addn. and the following filter and both oxidn. and conversion to CaSO4.1/2H2O take place without additional energy supply. SO2 is converted to SO3, which is then reacted with hydrated lime to form CaSC4.1/2H2O. The prod. of the dry process is useful in the gypsum industry. The process is much more economical than wet desulphurisation.
