The switch has a tubular casing (1) having axial contacts (9) and connection heads (2,3) inserted through the wall of the casing so as to define a U shaped current path (7). The Lorentz force of the current path on the switching arc is compensated by the field provided by a conductive ring (10) spaced at one side of the axial contacts. The ring pref. fits around the outside of a tubular switch chamber (11) of insulating material enclosing the contacts, to coaxially surround the latter at the separation zone. The switch can handle large short-circuit currents.
