Heterogeneous ligand-contg. carriers and complex catalysts contain inorganic carriers, ligand-bearing cpds. fixed to carrier surface and opt. form complex with transition metals. The carriers and catalysts are prepd. by (1) reacting a carrier, contg. OH gps. on surface, with an Si cpd. having formula -SiXQ- (I) (where X is a functional gp. capable of reacting the carrier OH gp. to form siloxane gps. and Q is a ligand-bearing gp.) and (2) opt. reacting the modified carrier with a transition metal cpd. Alternatively, (3), the carrier contg. OH gps. on surface is reacted with an Si cpd. having formula -SiXW- (II) (where W is a ligand-bearing gp. bonded to form a complex with a transition metal). Improvement comprises using a non-porous or macroporous carrier having average pore size 10-500nm. Before treatment with (I) or (II), the carrier is treated with 0.5-50 wt.%, w.r.t. carrier, of an Si cpd. having formula SiX4, (III), or RSiX3 (IV) (where R is alkyl, cycloalkyl or aryl) or an ester of oligomeric silicic acids with lower alkanols, at 0-100 deg.C. The ligand-contg. carriers can be used to separate transition metal ions or cpds. from solns. The catalysts can be used for hydrogenation, carbonylation, carboxylation, hydrosilylation, metathesis, oligomerisation and polymerisation.
