The axial piston engine comprises cylinders circumferentially spaced around the output shaft. These contain pistons connected to a swashplate on the shaft, whose inclination is variable to vary the piston stroke, whilst maintaining the compression ratio approx. constant. The shaft is axially slidable by a piston rotating with the shaft in a fixed hydraulic cylinder and transmits its output torque to a rotatable non-sliding bush via a spline. Levers are pivoted to this bush and to the swashplate so that axial adjustment of the shaft varies the inclination of the swashplate.
