To trigger a thyristor (3), a capacitor (1), which can be charged up by positive anode voltage of the thyristor, is discharged to the gate electrode (8) of the thyristor by triggering the auxiliary thyristor (7). For this purpose, the capacitor can be connected with one connection to the cathode and with the other connection via a resistor (4) to a junction (5) between a diode (9) and the auxiliary thyristor from the thyristor anode (6) to the gate electrode (8). The duration of the gating current is determined by the capacitance of the capacitor and the resistance and can be selected to be long enough for reliable triggering by means of light-pulse-triggerable auxiliary thyristors to be possible even under more difficult conditions such as, for example, parallel operation of a number of thyristors, highly inductive load or load current oscillations.
