A steplessly variable speed unit has a chain-like belt (14) between conical pulleys (10) whose flanges are moved axially by two levers (11) pivoted on axes between the pulley axis. Each lever pivot is on a block mounted on a nut (3) engaging a screw (9) for adusting the postion of the pivot to compensate for belt wear. The load on the block acts on the nut through an abutment formed by two springs arranged in parallel. One of the springs is relatively stiffer and is urged into a load-sharing condition with the other spring by a ring mounted on ramps so as to move axially against the spring under a turning movement applied by a third spring (7).
