The catalyst is produced from a Ti-Fe alloy with a Ti:Fe molar ratio of 1.0 by hydrogenation, so that an alloy is produced which contains a Fe-Ti intermetallic cpd. and sufficient free Ti to catalyse the conversion of N2 and H2 to NH3, (pt. of) the free Ti being hydrogenated (pref. to TiH2). This catalyst allows the use of much lower operating temps. and pressure than usual, so that greatly improved equilibrium yields of 30-60% can be attained. NH3 synthesis takes palce at a catalyst temp. of not 180 degrees C and a total pressure of not 1 at., using a H2/N2 molar ratio is not 3:1 and a throughput is not 500 Nm3 gas/h/tonne catalyst.
