A catalyst compsn. is prepd. by (a) copolymerising a mixt. of (1) an unsatd. carboxylic acid ester, (2) a hydrocarbon contg. at least one olefinic double bond and (3) a crosslinking agent comp-rising at least 2 independent olefinic double bond, the molar ratio of (1) to (2) being 1-5:1 and (3) comprising 1-25 wt.% of the other components: (b) converting the ester gps. of the copolymer to COOH gps; (c) reacting the prod. in opt. halogenated hydrocarbon medium with a transition metal cpd. which is soluble in the medium and is derived from a volatile acid cpd., under conditions of vaporisation of the acid cpd., and (d) reacting the prod. with an organometallic cpd. The compsn. is used for catalysing the hydrogenation of unsatd. cpds., e.g. unsatd. olefinic acetylenic or aromatic cpds. The cata-lyst can easily be sepd. from the hydrogenated prod. e.g. by filtration.
