Ergotamine tartrate preparation - by dissolving ergotamine in methanol-methylene chloride and mixing with D-tartaric acid in methanol

Prepn. of ergotamine tartrate, (I), comprises dissolving ergotamine in a 4-3:1 volumetric mixt. of methanol and methylene chloride at room temp. (opt. with removal of undissolved ergotaminine); mixing this soln. with 2-5% excess of a methanolic soln. of D-tartaric acid and sepg. pptd. crystalline ergotamine tartrate from the reaction medium. Pref. 12-15 ml of methanol/methylene chloride mixt. is used for each gram of alkaloid base. The present process avoids inconveniences of known processes and gives a pure crystalline product in good yields.
