A first sample is made up with a known vol. of treated, e.g. distilled water to which is added a predetermined vol. of conditioning prod., e.g. an electrolyte to facilitate obtaining a signal from a measuring electrode immersed in the sample. A signal is derived from this first sample. To this first sample is now added a succession of doses of a standard soln. contg. a known concn. of free ions. A signal is taken after each dose is added. A second sample is made up with a known vol. of the soln. to be analysed and a predetermined vol. of conditioning prod., an electrode sample is derived from the second sample. To this second sample is now added a succession of doses of standard soln. A signal is taken after each dose is added. All the signals frome electrode are passed to a microprocessor which computes and memorises the data. The microprocessor can then define the law relating the quantity to be measured to the magnitude of signals detected. The process and appts. are used to calibrate instruments which automatically detect and measure concn. of ions in surface water e.g. cyanide, fluoride, chloride and nitrate ions.
