A machine for spreading a sauce, paste etc. as a topping on a flat surface, partic. the top of a food prod. such as a pizza or tart. The spreading is done by a palette knife type of scraping blade. The blade is fixed to a rotatable support which turns about an axis vertical to the flat surface. The method of mounting the blade on its support allows the angle of the spreading edge to the flat surface to be adjusted. Pref. the blade support can be displaced, e.g. by fluid power cylinder, along its axis of rotation to move the blade to and fro w.r.t. the surface on which sauce etc. is to be spread. Pref. the spreading area of the blade is connected to the blade support by a resiliently deformable arm. The machine can be installed in a high speed prodn. line for pizzas etc. The blade is easily adjusted for different sizes and thicknesses of prod. Spreading pressure can be automatically adjusted for various viscosities of sauce, etc. Spreading pressure is self-relieving to avoid damage to the top of the food prod.
