Prodn. of vinyl 4-t-butylbenzoate (I) is carried out by reacting 4-t-butylbenzoic acid (II) with vinyl acetate (III) in the presence of (a) a co-catalyst comprising a combination of Cu and alkali metal cpds., including at least one halide, and (b) a supported Pd catalyst. The (III):(II) molar ratio is pref. 3-15:1. The catalyst is pref. Pd supported on active carbon. The co-catalyst is pref. a combination of CuBr2 and KOAc. The Cu : K : Br : (II) molar ratio is pref. (0.001-0.01) : (0.005-0.05) : (0.001-0.01) : 1. The process gives high yields of (I) without significant by- product formation. The catalyst and co-catalyst can be re-used repeatedly without significant loss of activity.
