Vertical axis wind or water driven turbine - uses horizontal radial arms with vertical pivoted vane at end of each and stop placed to hold mobile vane across flow
The appts. has a vertical axis carrying horizontal arms each supporting a vertical vane pivoted at one edge and having a stop limiting its travel, so the vane is held across the wind or water flow while turning with the flow, and is free to turn edge on to the flow as the return motion brings the vane into the flow. The vertical axis (A) carries a rigid structure (B) having horizontal arms each with a vertical shaft mounted near the end. This shaft is attached near one vertical edge of a vane. Fluid flow tends to align the vane with the flow direction. A stop (D) fixed to each arm limts the travel of the vane in order that it presents a component of area to the fluid flow while the arm moves with the flow. As the rotation carries the vane into opposition with the flow the vane is free to rotate to present only an edge to the flow.
