The device for preventing vehicles passing over a surface comprises a grating (9) which is arranged in a hollow cavity (8) in the path of the vehicles. The grating (8) pref. consists of a rectangular frame (9b) carrying at least one row of rigid teeth (10) and can pivot about an axis (9a) perpendicular to the path of the vehicles into a position in which the teeth (10) project vertically up from the ground. The grating is pref. pivoted into position by a pneumatic remote control mechanism, or by a rack and pinion mechanism.
