PURPOSE:To detect the level of the molten steel in a continuous casting mold accurately and quickly in a casting mold for continuous casting, by comparing the voltage of a thermocouple formed of a mold body and the metal on the inside wall surface consisting of a dissimilar metal with the voltage on a reference surface. CONSTITUTION:A casting mold for continuous casting is constituted of a mold body 1 made of Cu or a Cu alloy, and a heat- and abrasion resistant inside wall layer 3 made of Ni or an Ni alloy, and plural metallic wires 6 are disposed at specified intervals in the vertical direction of the mold. The metallic wires are the same Ni or Ni alloy wires as the metal of the layer 3 and are connected to the layer 3 isolatedly from the body 1. The mold body 1 and the layer 3 consisting of dissimilar metals constitute a thermocouple, and the voltage corresponding to the boundary surface temp. thereof is generated. An electric circuit is formed of the specific metal wire 6s such as in the lowermost end part in the casting mold and the respective metallic wires 6, and the difference in the thermoelectromotive force in the layer 3 between the wires 6 and 6s is detected, whereby the level of the molten steel in the casting mold is detected accurately without delay of time.
