Alpha-chloro-nitroso-alkane dimer prodn. - from olefin, sodium nitrite and hydrochloric acid, useful as intermediates to metal complexants, catalysts, hetero cyclic cpds. etc.
Prodn. of alpha-chloronitrosoalkane dimers (I) is effected by reacting an olefin with NaNO2 and HCl in an alcohol solvent. Exemplified cpds. (I) are of formula (Ia) (where R2 and R3 are Me or Et, or R2+R3 is (CH2)4 or completes a pinane ring). The reaction is pref. affected at -20 to 0 deg.C in MeOH or EtOH. One suitable olefin starting material is a petroleum-derived isoamylene fraction contg. at least 40 wt.% trimethylethylene (TME). (I) are useful as intermediates for (i) complexing agents useful in the extrn., isolation and purificn. of metals, (ii) catalysts, and (iii) heterocyclic cpds., e.g. imidazoline-based nitroxyl radicals. The process is simpler to operate than prior art process, avoids use of toxic reagents, and gives high yields (e.g. 72-83%).
