Continuous selective hydrogenation of edible oils and fats, is at 150-260 deg.C under hydrogen pressure up to 150 psi, in contact with a fixed catalyst consisting of a Gp. VIII metal on alpha-alumina with surface area below 10 m2/g and microporous volume below 0.1 ml/g. Prefd. are vegetable oils, esp. soya, with contact time sufficient to reduce the iodine value by 10-30. The catalyst is pref. Ni or Co on alpha-alumina with surface area below 5(3) m2/g, microporous volume below 0.05 ml/g and microporous volume below 0.6(0.3) ml/g.
