A multi-stage sealing and closure system is proposed for a plastic drum which can be closed by a plastic lid and a clamping strap. In this case, a support surface (7) formed on the drum neck (2), projections (8) and a circumferential surface (11) as well as recesses (21) formed in the outer edge (14) of the lid (4) interact with supporting lugs (23) when the clamping strap (10) is closed in such a way that, for the case of normal transportation and normal manipulation, a sealing ring (17) in the lid (4) is loaded with a given sealing force, and that, in the case of an overload, a reinforcement of the entire closure system occurs, in which an additional, but limited sealing force is applied to the sealing ring (17). The compression of the sealing ring (17) to an extent in which permanent deformation occurs is ruled out. IMAGE
