Prescribed parameters are used to drive a welding robot, so the tip of a welding burner travels along a prescribed path (a). For multilayer welding, a first pass is undertaken along path (a), and then at least one of the prescribed parameters is altered so the tip of the burner is displaced by a specific amt. before it travels a second time along path (a). In the pref. process, the welding burner is mounted on the robot by pivot arms so the tip of the burner can be aligned at a specific distance and/or at a specific angle w.r.t the seam being welded., esp. by using two pivots aligned at 90 deg. w.r.t each other. Multipass welding can be achieved using simpler programs and at reduced cost.
