The invention is concerned with herbicidally active propionic acid esters of the general formula IMAGE wherein R1 represents hydrogen, C1-6 alkyl or a phenyl group, R2 represents C1-6 alkyl, C2-6 alkenyl, C2-6 alkynyl or a phenyl group or R1 and R2 together with the carbon atom to which they are attached form a C4-10 cycloalkane ring which, if desired, can be mono-, di- or tri-substituted with C1-3 alkyl, R3 represents a halogen atom or a trifluoromethyl or nitro group and R4 and R5 each represent a hydrogen or halogen atom.
