The invention proposes a method and a machine for cutting thin-layered material, preferably tobacco leaves. Knives (10) fixed in a holder have corrugated blades. The knife blades are repeatedly sharpened with the aid of a rotating grinding disc (30) which extends over the entire length of the knives. The grinding disc is approximately cylindrical with a corrugated profile which is formed by a series of adjoining grooves and is arranged in such a way, relative to the path of movement of the knives, that the knife blade is sharpened on the grinding disc during each pass.
