The invention relates to a compact apparatus for computer-controlled fluorometric evaluation of the pollutant effect on intact plants and chloroplast suspensions, comprising a light source as primary radiation for exciting fluorescence, optical elements for focusing the exciting light, a leaf holder for in-vivo measurements, and a measuring cell for toxic gases, the control, storage and evaluation being undertaken by a microcomputer system of modular design. The light of a He-Ne laser is conducted through a lens system onto the entrance surface of one arm of a two-armed, mixed light guide; the electronic shutter serves to set the exposure time. The fluorescent light produced by the sample is conducted through the other arm of the light guide via a filter system ( lambda 690 nm) onto a photodiode having an integrated amplifier, and thereafter the signal is further processed by the microcomputer. The fluorometer can be used to judge directly and quickly the pollutant effect, both in practice and in research.
