Electrostatic purification of non-conducting liquids - with means of preventing turbulence due to field, useful for fuel oils, lubricants etc.

An appts. for purifying non-conducting liquid electrostatically incorporates a vessel, in which anode and cathode plates are arranged face to face, a feed pump and entry pipe below the bottom edges of the plates, an outlet for purified liq. at the top, and a number of collectors on which the powder sepd. from the liq. is deposited. The collectors are made of porous dielectric material, made e.g. from natural or synthetic fibre or glass fibre, and are placed between the electrode plates so as to extend parallel to the electric field. The vessel is made of conducting material and the inside wall is connected to the anode plates, so that the vessel forms part of the electrodes and is maintained at earth potential. The appts. is used mainly for purifying fuel oils and lubricating oils, particularly for removing particles of metal, e.g. aluminium which cannot be filtered out, and also for purifying solvents.
